The project

Elegant clothing for the woman who moves the world.

A UAE-based fashion label with a global vision needed a site to match.

Meelah is a modest fashion brand founded by Jamila Abubakar, a Nigerian-born, UAE-based designer whose work is rooted in cultural diversity, kindness, and the pursuit of genuine happiness. Her garments flow. Her silhouettes are architectural. Her collections carry names like "Ethereal" and "Vivid."

She had no site. What she had was a brand identity already living in the clothes themselves, and a customer who deserved to encounter it digitally before she encountered it in person.

The challenge was translating a deeply personal, culturally layered brand into a clean, international e-commerce experience without flattening what made it distinctive.

The challenge

  • Cultural identity without cultural costume. Meelah's designs are rooted in Nigerian and Emirati heritage, but the brand speaks to a global customer. The site had to feel culturally informed without being reduced to it.
  • Founder as the brand. Jamila's story, Born in Nigeria, settled in UAE, nature as muse, is inseparable from Meelah's identity. The About and founder sections had to carry that weight without reading like a biography.
  • Two distinct collections, one coherent system. Ethereal and Vivid are aesthetically opposite, cream and silence versus magenta and drama. The site had to hold both without privileging one or diluting the other.
  • International commerce from the UAE. USD and AED currency switching, global shipping, modest fashion for a customer base that spans cultures and continents. The UX had to feel borderless.

Designing the experience

Every choice made for a woman who knows exactly who she is.

01

Rounded hero frame

The homepage hero image sits inside a rounded rectangle, not edge-to-edge. This single framing decision gives the site warmth and distinction from standard fashion e-commerce. It feels like a window into the world rather than a billboard in front of it.

02

Warm ivory ground throughout

Not white, warm ivory. The background carries the same warmth as the garments themselves. On a pure white background, Meelah's cream Ethereal pieces would disappear. The ivory ground creates separation without coldness.

03

Collection naming as editorial

"Ethereal Collection" and "Vivid Collection", names that describe an experience, not a season. The split-screen layout presents them as equals: one quiet, one dramatic, side by side. The tension between them is the brand.

04

Centered serif wordmark

MEELAH in a wide-tracked serif, centered at the top of every page. The tracking is the character, it reads as considered, not loud. A fashion wordmark that fits a luxury modest brand without borrowing from Western fashion house conventions.

05

Founder section as brand anchor

Full-height portrait photograph left, founder story right. Not a headshot, a portrait. Not a bio, a philosophy. "Nature serves as Jamila's muse." This section is why a customer trusts the brand before they add to cart.

06

Product grid with context photography

Best Sellers uses a mix of studio and location photography in the same grid, controlled studio for product clarity, natural outdoor scenes for brand atmosphere. The variety makes the grid feel editorial rather than catalogued.

What was built in

A global fashion site with a deeply personal soul.

Two collections, one coherent world

Ethereal and Vivid sit in permanent dialogue on the site, cream and magenta, silence and drama. The design system holds both without flattening either.

Founder story as conversion tool

The About section doesn't just introduce Jamila, it makes a customer feel like they understand why these clothes exist. That emotional connection is what converts a browser into a buyer.

International UX from day one

USD and AED currency switching, global shipping architecture, and a design that reads as luxury regardless of where the customer is shopping from.
